Steel makers to avoid prolonged downturn
The metal, iron and steel industries expect costs to fall and demand to level up next year, helping manufacturers to avoid continued contraction triggered by the 2008 global economic crisis.
Given extremely poor sales conditions and sky rocketing production costs, the extent of the contraction reached 7.19 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of this year. But there is likely to be a turn for the better next year.
The industry ministry said it expects up to 2.75 percent growth in sales by the end of 2010.
Mr Ansari Buchari steel ministry's director general for metal, machinery, textile and miscellaneous industries said that "We expect conditions will get back to normal in 2010, with more balanced costs and production structures."
Improvement in global market conditions, Ansari said, would help the basic metal, iron and steel industries to grow beyond 2 percent next year even though producers spent only limited amounts on new investment this year.
He said that improvement in global market conditions would help the basic metal, iron and steel industries to grow beyond 2% next year even though producers spent only limited amounts on new investment this year.
Investment by the big players, he said, would soon start with the signing of an agreement next week between state-owned steelmaker PT Krakatau Steel and South Korean steelmaker Pohang Iron and Steel Company (Posco) to build a new US$5 billion steel factory in Cilegon, Banten.
The factory is expected to produce 2.5 million tons of steel slabs and steel billets pear year in the first phase of operations.
Mr Hidajat Triseputro executive director of Indonesian Iron & Steel Industry Association said that the slump in global demand had forced many manufacturers to run on as little as 30% to 40% of their production capacity. He added that "Our utilized capacity has been only 30% to 40% since the third quarter of last year, in contrast to 70% of utilized capacity in the second quarter of 2008."
Mr Hidajat said that apart from enjoying a positive trend towards favorable global market conditions, steel producers were also hoping to benefit from the government's increased support for infrastructure projects starting next year. He added that "That is where our hope lies. With infrastructure projects running, there will be many steel manufacturers positively affected. Infrastructure and toll roads need steel."
Hidajat said apart from enjoying a positive trend towards favorable global market conditions, steel producers were also hoping to benefit from the government's increased support for infrastructure projects starting next year.
"That is where our hope lies. With infrastructure projects running, there will be many steel manufacturers *positively affected*. Infrastructure and toll roads need steel," Hidajat said.
However, he also warned of a possible rush of steel imports next year, when a free trade agreement between Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China begins to come into effect, which will include steel (among other products).
He said the association was gathering information after recent indications of increases in steel imports.
The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that imports of iron and steel increased from US$279.6 million in July to $364.5 million in August and $434.1 million in September; and imports of iron and steel products stood at $237.5 million in July, $239.3 million in August and $184.4 million in September.
However, between January and September, overall imports of iron and steel declined from $6.6 billion last year to $2.7 billion this year and imports of iron and steel products declined from $2.4 billion last year to $2.1 billion this year, the BPS says.

Oil jumps above $80
Benchmark crude for December delivery added 54 cents to $80.14 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude for December delivery rose 55 cents to $78.66 on the ICE Futures exchange.
There are signs that the economy may have bottomed out, which could mean energy demand will bounce back.
Yet the speed at which crude and gasoline prices are rising has raised concern that the added burden for U.S. consumers and business could quash the very recovery that oil investors anticipate.
Crude prices have increased since the summer despite large petroleum stockpiles and a drop in American driving.
One big part of rising oil prices is the value of the dollar. Oil is traded in U.S. currency, and as the dollar falls, oil gets cheaper for investors holding euros and other strong international currencies.
Later Wednesday, the U.S. Federal Reserve will release a statement on interest rates. Interest rates, which have a heavy influence on the dollar, are expected to be left unchanged near zero, though the language in the Fed statement will be parsed for any hints about the health of the economy and how soon rates might be increased.
Benefits outsourcer Automatic Data Processing Inc. said in a report Wednesday that fewer jobs were lost in October than September.
Meanwhile, analysts expect the government will say Wednesday that oil inventories grew last week, though a survey by American Petroleum Institute showed that crude stockpiles dropped.
Investors also have been pumping money into oil contracts on the expectation that Americans will start driving more as the economy recovers.
OPEC isn't "telling you that oil is a good buy at these prices," analyst Stephen Schork said. "The only people who are telling you that oil is worth $85 (a barrel) is Wall Street."
In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose less than a penny to $2.0757 a gallon. Gasoline for December delivery advanced 1.16 cents to $2.012 a gallon. Natural gas for December fell 6.3 cents to $4.859 per 1,000 cubic feet.(The Jakarta Post).
Oil prices top $80 in New York
New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in December spiked as high as $81.06 per barrel, before pulling back to close at $80.40, up 80 cents from Tuesday.
In London, Brent North Sea crude for December delivery climbed 78 cents to settle at $78.89 a barrel.
The US Department of Energy (DoE) announced Wednesday that US crude reserves sank by four million barrels in the week ending October 30, surprising analysts expecting a rise.
The DoE added that there were also small drops in stockpiles of gasoline (petrol) and distillates, which include heating fuel and diesel.
Andy Lipow at Lipow Oil Associates said the inventory data "was a very big surprise to the market and that coupled with a weaker dollar contributed to the market rallying."
He said the Federal Reserve announcement later in the day -- keeping near-zero interest rates with no hint of a change in policy -- also buoyed sentiment.
"The perception is that as the economy grows, people have more money in their pocket, they can spend more money that translates into higher petroleum demand," he said.
Mike Fitzpatrick at MF Global said traders were searching for signs of a pickup in economic activity, which would boost demand for energy and lift prices.
"Waxing and waning sentiment focusing on a recovery is again dominating participants' trading decisions," he said.
"Is there a recovery under way? Will a recovery be sustainable? Will consumers open their wallets again?"
He said the situation may become clearer after the monthly US jobs report on Friday, which is expecting to show job losses narrowing to around 175,000 in October.
"It will be recorded as a definite positive if job losses are 200,000 or less," Fitzpatrick said.
"As the economy appears to be improving, economists' repeated exhortations over the years for Americans to consume less and for the Chinese to consume more looks to be coming true.
Purvin and Gertz analyst Victor Shum said prices were unlikely to hold above $80 owing to concerns about weak energy demand amid mixed signals on the state of the global economy.
"When oil gets close to the $80 level and the market tends to focus more on the high inventories of crude oil and fuel globally, it is difficult to surge through $80 and sustain above the $80 level," Shum said.
Oil prices had already leapt on Tuesday as commodities gained a boost from gold futures, which have struck a series of record highs.
The price of gold surged to a record peak in the wake of the International Monetary Fund's massive sale of the precious metal to India.
Gold and other commodity prices have surged in recent months amid a move away from the dollar, which has been slumping. The move accelerated last month on a report that Gulf states may stop using the greenback for oil trading.

PT Pertamina plans to spend Rp 39 trillion ($4.15 billion) in 2010
Ferederick ST Siahaan, Pertamina's finance director, said the company's capital expenditure would increase from Rp 22 trillion, which is the spending estimate for this year, up to Rp 39 trillion in 2010.
"This is our prediction, but we still need approval from the shareholder meeting," Ferederick ST Siahaan, finance director, said.
He added that as much as $2.5 billion of the spending would be secured from loans, including from $1 billion of global (dollar-denominated) bonds and Rp 1 trillion of rupiah-denominated bonds.
"We can only issue the bonds after the financial audit for 2009 is finished. Thus, this will perhaps be in March or April next year," said Ferederick, adding that this was also subject to shareholders' approval.
Pertamina plans to use around Rp 26 trillion, about 66.67 percent of the planned capital expenditure in 2010, investing in upstream activities, he added.
Pertamina president director Karen Agustiawan said the company expected to boost oil production by 10.93 percent next year. The company estimates that it will produce 174,000 barrel oil per day (bopd) this year.
"We expect to increase the production target to 193,900 bopd in 2010," Karen said.
Karen added that the Cepu block was expected to contribute significantly to the targeted oil production increase in the coming year.
"We expect that the Cepu block will start its early production of 20,000 bopd by the beginning of 2010. Of this production, Pertamina expect to get 9,000 bopd," Karen said.
As for gas production, Pertamina expects to increase production from 1,314 million standard cubic feet per (MMSCFD) of gas, which is the 2009' gas production estimate, to 1,370 MMSCFD in 2010.
Ferederick said that Pertamina would also use part of the planned capital spending upgrading existing refineries and on the construction of new refineries.
In the period 2012 to 2016, Pertamina plans to upgrade production capacity at the refineries in Plaju, Cilacap, Balikpapan, Dumai, and Balongan.
It also plans to construct three new refineries, namely the Blue Sky Cilacap refinery in Cilacap, Central Java; the Banten Bay refinery in Banten; and the East Java refinery.
Ferederick said these upstream projects would require investment finance of between $17 billion and 19 billion. "The finance will be prepared next year," he added.
Pertamina has been the most profitable state owned company. This year, the company expects to book as much as Rp 15.39 trillion in profits, a major fall on the Rp 30.195 trillion booked by the firm in 2008, reflecting earlier higher oil prices.

Before I discuss the actual online business, let me share with you a few critical success factors to become successful in whatever thing we do,including the Internet business.
The other day I read a book by Zig Ziglar, an American top motivator. In the book, one of the quotation summed up what it takes to become rich. The quotation says" The profile of a wealthy person is this: hard work,
Debit cards or credit cards
The use of debit cards has become widespread in many countries and has overtaken the cheque, and in some instances cash transactions by volume. Like credit cards, debit cards are used widely for telephone and Internet purchases, and unlike credit cards the funds are transferred from the bearer's bank account instead of having the bearer to pay back on a later date.
Debit cards can also allow for instant withdrawal of cash, acting as the ATM card for withdrawing cash and as a cheque guarantee card. Merchants can also offer "cashback"/"cashout" facilities to customers, where a customer can withdraw cash along with their purchase.
Credit card
A credit card is part of a system of payments named after the small plastic card issued to users of the system. It is a card entitling its holder to buy goods and services based on the holder's promise to pay for these goods and services. The issuer of the card grants a line of credit to the consumer (or the user) from which the user can borrow money for payment to a merchant or as a cash advance to the user.
A credit card is different from a charge card, where a charge card requires the balance to be paid in full each month. In contrast, credit cards allow the consumers to 'revolve' their balance, at the cost of having interest charged. Most credit cards are issued by local banks or credit unions, and are the shape and size specified by the ISO/IEC 7810 standard as ID-1. This is defined as 85.60 53.98 mm in size.
Debit cards or credit cards?
Credit or debit? That question will sound familiar to anyone who has presented their credit card or debit card when making an in-store purchase. But before you even get to the register, you should ask yourself that very same question in order to decide if you want a debit card or credit card in your wallet.
For consumers, the difference between a "debit card" and a "credit card" is that the debit card deducts the balance from a deposit account, like a checking account, whereas the credit card allows the consumer to spend money on credit to the issuing bank. In other words, a debit card uses the money you have and a credit card uses the money you don't have. "Debit cards" which are linked directly to a checking account are sometimes dual-purpose, so that they can be used as a credit card, and can be charged by merchants using the traditional credit networks. A merchant will ask for "credit or debit?" if the card is a combined credit+debit card. If the payee chooses "credit", the credit balance will be debited the amount of the purchase which is then withdrawn at a later date; if the payee chooses "debit", the bank account balance will be debited the amount of the purchase and the money will be withdrawn from the bank account immediately. Another option is to have a credit connected to the bank account so that if there is no money on it, the bank allows some negative balance according to a credit agreement. Then the customer does not have to choose credit or debit, the debit card turns into a credit card if there is not enough account balance.
Paying by debit is quick and easy, and will not result in you paying any interest. However, as mentioned earlier, debit card users do not experience the float enjoyed when making a check or credit card payment. When making debit card payments for large purchases, it is best to do so at a store that allows you to thoroughly inspect the merchandise before buying. Also, large purchases may need to go on your credit card due to the fact some debit cards carry a maximum daily spending limit. Finally, credit cards remain preferable for ordering merchandise over the phone or the Internet, as they allow the consumer greater recourse in case something goes wrong.
Remember, its prudent to live within ones means, and in that regard the discipline of spending using ones Debit card is a good one. Use your credit card only when you are confident that you have the capacity to repay your dues.

Microsoft Layoff 2009 Completes Last Milestone and Ships!
With today's 800 Microsoft layoffs, Microsoft Layoff 2009 has reached its final milestone and shipped, exceeded expectations of 5,000 with 5,800 reduced positions.
Err... yay?
Last week during the Town Hall Mr. Ballmer confirmed there would be one more iteration on the layoffs. And after that? Who knows. More to come? Maybe. Booga booga!
You know, we have people working for Microsoft (or, at least did, I don't know, maybe no longer) responsible for driving executive leadership education and growth at Microsoft. This is their friggin' job. Develop Microsoft Leadership at the executive and L68+ levels. So, has anyone hemmed and hawed in-front of Mr. Ballmer and mentioned that this nickel and diming layoff approach is at the worst case end of the layoff management scale?
The looming threat of continuing RIFs and layoffs indicates that Microsoft is just too big for its leadership. It is beyond their capabilities to wrap their minds around everything Microsoft is doing. It has gotten away from them. What needs to go? Hell, I don't know even what all these people do, and you want to decide who stays and goes?
Yes.
Cut deep. Cut once. Get on with it and say, "We're done. We have aligned our company to be efficient and effective within this new global economic climate and are ready to focus on returning to profits and market share growth."
Done.
Coverage I've noticed today on the outside:
- Mr. Brier Dudley's blog Microsoft cuts 800 more jobs, including 200 in Puget Sound Seattle Times Newspaper
- Mr. Joe Wilcox: Is there any sense to Microsoft's 800 layoffs Betanews and Former Microsofties, Can I Tell Your Story Oddly Together
- Mr. Nick Eaton Microsoft laying off 800 more
- Ms. Mary Jo Foley Are the Microsoft layoffs over now All about Microsoft ZDNet.com
- Mr. Joseph Tartakoff Microsoft Cuts 800 More Positions paidContent
On Don Dodge:
- Mr. Michael Arrington: Microsoft Loses Don Dodge. This Is A Huge Mistake
- Nick Eaton Startup guru Don Dodge among Microsoft layoffs
- John Cook Startup guru Don Dodge among those let go in Microsoft cuts
And, bummers for me given that she interviewed me for Microspotting, Ms. Ariel Stallings tweet about being caught up in this layoff round.
Coverage from the inside? No email. Quiet. Quite dysfunctional. There was something linked off of the MSW site and it also had a FAQ document that had to be one of the worse FAQs I've ever read. There is an "A" portion to an FAQ and in this case some of the questions were great but the answers looked like they were generated from some sort of English obfuscation Perl script 3rd place prize winner.
So, I'm going through about sixty comments now on the older post. I think it was necessary for Microsoft to have layoffs due to the mismanaged growth and lack of focus and direction our Senior Leadership Team has given us. But it should have been twice as much, done all at once. Now we dither.
Were you affected by the layoff or know someone who was? I'd be interested in knowing which groups and organizations are affected.

Associated Press , London | Sun, 11/01/2009 12:54 PM | Business
The assets being put up for sale would be reserved for new entrants to the British banking market, effectively creating three new banks over the next five years or so, the official said late Saturday.
The official said that the banks were in negotiations with Britain's treasury and European regulators over how many assets they would have to give up in return for the help they received from taxpayers.
"Essentially, they are expected to have to divest - each of them - some of their branches," he said.
As many as 700 branches could be sold off, the official said. That figure would include all of Northern Rock's 100 or so branches, as well as chunks from the Lloyds Banking Group PLC's approximately 3,000 branches and just over 2,200 branches operated by the Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC.
Established players such as Barclays PLC or the Spanish Banco Santander S.A., which owns three UK banking businesses, would not be allowed to bid.
The official warned that the figures were subject to change, and spoke on condition of anonymity because the moves had yet to be finalized. He added that an official announcement could come within days.
The shake-up would come after Britain pumped billions of pounds (dollars) into its banking sector in an effort to stave off the collapse of its financial system in the wake of the credit crunch. Northern Rock was nationalized early last year after it struggled to raise funds from crunch-hit wholesale lending markets. The government has significant stakes in both RBS and Lloyds Banking Group.
